Alan’s Second Diary: On Government and the Illusion of Control

An editor’s reflections on power

I attended a government meeting today that was about absolutely nothing. Two hours to discuss a policy that won’t change anything. Everyone in the room knew it was pointless. Nobody said it. We all just went along with the performance.

This is what government has become. An elaborate theater where everyone pretends to be doing something while nothing actually gets done. The only real work is protecting power and preventing change.

I was reading about the mechanics of bureaucracy and realized that the system is actually designed not to work. If it worked perfectly, it would threaten the status quo. So it’s optimized for paralysis and failure.

So I keep going to meetings and writing papers and pretending my work matters. Not because I think it does, but because the alternative is giving up completely. And I’m not ready for that yet.
