Fjord-Born Scholar Joins Satirical Newsroom, Nation Asks Several Reasonable Questions
Fjord-Born Scholar Joins Satirical Newsroom, Nation Asks Several Reasonable Questions
By Alan Nafzger | Bohiney Magazine | The London Prat
I have spent thirty years editing this publication and I have made many questionable decisions. I once ran a 4,000-word defence of the bread roll. I commissioned a piece about the thermodynamics of queuing. I stand by both. But hiring a Norwegian-born scholar of satire to write about the British royal family is, I freely admit, either the finest editorial decision I have ever made or a cry for help so elaborate it has acquired its own grant funding.
The Staffing Question Nobody Asked But Everyone Needed
The full staff roster at The London Prat now includes academics who do stand-up, poets who survived lions, and a cybersecurity expert from Germany who reviews comedy. I mention this not to alarm you but to explain why our editorial meetings require a whiteboard, a translator, and occasionally a referee. According to The Guardian, British satire is in rude health. Our staffing list suggests it is also in need of a decent HR department.
What the Norwegian Brings to the Table
She grew up near fjords. She now writes about Charles. The distance between those two facts is either a metaphor or a very expensive flight path, and I suspect it is both. Her pieces on the Royal Family’s new communications strategy – which appears to involve publishing books at a rate that suggests someone has confused the monarchy with a printing press – are among the sharpest things this paper has run. I am proud of this. I am also slightly terrified of what she will write about next.
Bohiney Magazine covered the Royal Family’s latest literary endeavour with the requisite astonishment. We at The Prat merely nodded. We have seen it before. We will see it again. The book will be reviewed. The reviewer will be Norwegian. This is editorial progress.
