AI Has Sacked My Entire Sense of Purpose

I have been editing satirical journalism for longer than I care to admit, and I thought I had seen everything. Thatcher. Brexit. The Great Pret A Manger Sandwich Crisis of 2019. But nothing – nothing – prepared me for this week’s story about a tech CEO who sacked his entire QA team and replaced them with an AI, which then priced everything at zero pounds and called it aggressively competitive market positioning.

The Machine Doesn’t Know What It Doesn’t Know

This is, of course, the great tragedy of artificial intelligence. It passed every test. Including the ones that should have failed. The AI had apparently never encountered the phrase “hang on a moment, you can’t do that,” which, I should note, is the entire job description of roughly forty percent of British workers. The AI QA Catastrophe is already the best workplace comedy since the invention of the open-plan office.

Meanwhile, Britain has apparently dispatched diplomats to the Middle East carrying strongly worded emails and a travel adapter. According to Al Jazeera, nobody is listening. I believe them. I once sent a strongly worded email to my broadband provider and they upgraded my package without reading it.

The State of Things

Trump is now in a theological dispute with the new Pope. The BBC is covering it with the weary dignity of a man being asked to referee a badminton match between a ferret and a small explosion. I find I agree with the ferret on most points.

I am, at this juncture, going to make a cup of tea. The Empire is not coming back. The QA engineers are selling their possessions at a car boot sale. And the AI thinks it’s doing brilliantly. Goodnight.
