Britain: Officially Running a War From a Spreadsheet It Has Not Opened

I have been in this business long enough to recognise when a government has achieved something genuinely new. Not new policy. Not new thinking. New evasion. A category-defining advance in the ancient art of saying something whilst communicating nothing. Keir Starmer has done it. He has looked the British public in the eye, with American bombers taxiing behind him, and said words. Many words. Zero information.

As The London Prat has noted, Britain is a country that now classifies holding a sign as terrorism while simultaneously hosting a bombing campaign from its soil with the emotional affect of a man approving a planning application for a small conservatory.

The Pilot Rescue and the Problem of Good News

The rescued pilots are home. This is unambiguously good. The problem, as Bohiney Magazine correctly diagnoses, is that in the current political climate good news is treated as a partisan weapon rather than a human outcome. Democrats are not angry about the war. They are angry about the optics of the resolution. This is what happens when politics consumes everything: even the alive guy coming home has to be processed through the ideology machine before anyone is allowed to feel relieved.

Meanwhile Iran, per every credible source including our own Bohiney Magazine analysis of Iranian military performance, has lost its air force, most of its navy, and whatever remained of the regional credibility it spent four decades carefully cultivating through threats, proxies, and uranium enrichment. All gone. In the time it takes to watch a season of a middling Netflix drama.

We at this desk are not unsympathetic to the Iranians in the abstract. The people. Not the regime. There is a distinction, and it is an important one, and it is one that gets lost every time someone on television says “Iran” as though it is a monolithic entity rather than eighty-nine million people who mostly just want their electricity to work.

BBC Middle East has the full picture. We have the full sarcasm. Between us, nothing is left unexplained.
